A driving instructor is a professional who teaches various defensive driving techniques to drivers. Besides focusing on strengthening the driving skills, their task is also to teach the drivers about the importance of preventing accidents.
How To Become Qualified Instructor
There are various training courses that you can join and after successfully completing the same, you can start your career as an approved driving instructor. However, this type of training demands that you invest a considerable amount of time, money, and effort. You have to be committed.
Eligibility Requirements
Following are some of the eligibility criteria that you must fulfill in order to become an approved instructor.
Out of the past six years, you must be holding a full and unrestricted driving license for a total of four years at least.
During these four years, you should not have received any disqualification from driving.
All types of motoring as well as non motoring convictions are taken into consideration in order to decide whether you qualify for the driving instructor course.
You must also pay the required fee and pass the register qualifying examination.
You must be at least 21 years old.
There are no requirements for any formal academic qualifications. You can become an approved instructor even if you do not hold a good degree.
Defensive Driving Instructor Courses
Some of the common defensive driving instructor courses that are offered by these training schools include DDC Coaching for the Mature Driver, DDC attitudinal dynamics of driving, DDC 8/6, DDC 8 state of Virginia, DDC 6 state of New York, DDC 4, and DDC for professional truck drivers (DDC PTD). After completing the DDC 6/8 instructor training course and the DDC for professional truck drivers, you can start offering your services as a provisional instructor. In that case, you may also take advantage of the insurance premium discount. The course length for these courses is very small – as little as six to eight hours. These courses are most suitable for driving school instructors, fleet managers, and safety managers.
Defensive Driving Instructor Training Module
The training module for driving instructor includes a wide array of topics, such as improving effective administrative responsibilities, teaching skills, and adult learning needs. Other topics that are covered in these courses include the defensive driving techniques for accident preventability, head on collisions, road rage, chemical abuse issues, following distance and passing, and backing and turns.
Who Provides The Training For Instructors
These days, it is not very difficult to find a training center that offers courses for a driving instructor. National Safety Council is probably the first national organization to launch this type of training courses. However, several private driving schools have also started offering these courses in accordance with state standards. You will be glad to know that some schools do not even charge a training fee. The training is provided free of cost for you provided you meet the eligibility requirements.
Once you are registered with the driving standards agency, you can start your career as a driving instructor either on a self employed basis or by joining a defensive driving training agency.
